{"id":5730,"date":"2021-04-28T15:12:14","date_gmt":"2021-04-28T15:12:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/billcorrigan.com\/updates\/?p=5730"},"modified":"2021-04-28T15:13:41","modified_gmt":"2021-04-28T15:13:41","slug":"how-to-wage-chemical-warfare-against-your-employees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/billcorrigan.com\/updates\/?p=5730","title":{"rendered":"How to Wage Chemical Warfare Against Your Employees\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b>How to Wage Chemical Warfare Against Your Employees<\/b> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cWhat is happiness?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s a moment before you need more happiness.\u201d<\/i> &#8211; Don Draper<\/p>\n<p>There is a school of thought that posits that happy employees are better employees.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The idea is that happy employees communicate better, they treat customers nicer, work harder, are more productive, and loyal. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>If you survey your employees by asking them what makes them happy you may get a rainbow of answers.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Some will tell you that <i>family and friends, meaningful work, and positive thinking <\/i>makes them happy.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Some will tell you that <i>gratitude, forgiveness, and giving to others<\/i> does it for them.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Still more will tell you that <i>religion, personal freedom, and good health<\/i> puts a smile on their faces.<\/p>\n<p>Hooey!<\/p>\n<p>As professionals we are required to act on data.<\/p>\n<p>And the data shows that there are, in fact, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">only eight things that make people happy<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>And they are illustrated here in this joy-inducing graphic that I stole from someplace on the internet\u2026<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5731\" src=\"https:\/\/billcorrigan.com\/updates\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Happy-Brain-Chemicals.jpg\" alt=\"Happy Brain Chemicals\" width=\"736\" height=\"520\" srcset=\"https:\/\/billcorrigan.com\/updates\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Happy-Brain-Chemicals.jpg 736w, https:\/\/billcorrigan.com\/updates\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Happy-Brain-Chemicals-300x212.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 736px) 100vw, 736px\" \/>(Please note: if you are the creator of this graphic, know that you produced great happiness in me for creating and sharing it with the world and I thank you for it.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Drop me a line if it\u2019s you!)<\/i><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s right. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The eight things that produce happiness are:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Serotonin &#8211; the self-esteem and sleep chemical<\/li>\n<li>Oxytocin &#8211; the trust chemical<\/li>\n<li>Melatonin &#8211; the rest and relaxation chemical<\/li>\n<li>Norepinephrine &#8211; the excitement chemical<\/li>\n<li>Acetylcholine &#8211; the alertness chemical<\/li>\n<li>Endorphins &#8211; the pain killer chemical<\/li>\n<li>Dopamine &#8211; the reward chemical, and<\/li>\n<li>Phenylethylmine &#8211; the bliss and infatuation chemical<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>So, as a leader of people, how can you make your employees happy? <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Are there ways you can hack their brain chemicals to produce happiness?<\/p>\n<p>Certainly!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b>You Say \u201cWaging Chemical Warfare Against Your Employees\u201d Like It\u2019s A Bad Thing<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Lacking a medical degree and permission to inject your employees brains with a productivity slurry, you may need to find some more humane (and legal) ways to get their juices flowing.<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few tips from the pros.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Dopamine<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Low levels of dopamine cause employees to procrastinate, doubt themselves, and lack enthusiasm.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>With low levels of dopamine people will opt for easier options and accept less reward, where people with high levels of dopamine will be able to exert more effort in anticipation for greater rewards.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Dopamine Hack<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Help your employees boost their dopamine levels by creating new goals for them before they accomplish the current tasks at hand.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>You know the idioms \u201cthe work never ends\u201d or \u201cthere\u2019s always more work\u201d.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>That\u2019s a good thing if done in digestible chunks.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>As your staff checks off their tasks make sure you recognize their accomplishments.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Regularly send your team encouraging emails and pepper the month with small bonuses wherever you can.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This gives them a dopamine shot that will increase future motivation and productivity.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Serotonin<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Your employees\u2019 serotonin gets flowing when they feel significant and important.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Staff members who exhibit unhealthy attention-seeking behaviors could be suffering from low levels of serotonin.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The same for staff members acting sullen or withdrawn. Most anti-depressants focus on the production of serotonin.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Serotonin Hack<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The brain has a hard time telling the difference between what is currently real and what is remembered memories from the past.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The good thing about this is that it will produce serotonin in both cases.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Practice gratitude with your staff members.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Rehash past positive memories of their success and accomplishments.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Remind them of the times they closed the deal, beat the deadline, and made the guy in the corner office proud.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Boost morale by being your people\u2019s biggest cheerleader.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Oxytocin<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Known as the \u201ccuddle hormone\u201d Oxytocin is released when men and women are doing things that would be stroke-inducing in your HR manager if we discussed them at work.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>If you work at a company that provides \u201cmother rooms\u201d know that they understand the importance of Oxytocin production. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Oxytocin Hack<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Well, what are you to do if you exist in a non-touching environment where even hugs are taboo?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>(yes, hugs boost Oxytocin.)<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Well, giving gifts to people also causes elevated production of Oxytocin.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Birthday gifts, anniversary gifts, or just gifts for no reason is a great way to boost Oxytocin levels in your staff members.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The company store should know you and your expense account on a first-name basis.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Endorphins<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Many of you are familiar with endorphins being released when runners get their \u201chigh\u201d or if you\u2019ve ever experienced a \u201csecond wind\u201d.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Endorphins are released in response to pain, stress and they help alleviate anxiety.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Endorphins act as an analgesic and sedative which diminishes a persons perception of pain.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Endorphin Hack<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Exercise and laughter are the easiest ways to release endorphins.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Even the anticipation and expectation of fun and laughter will get endorphins flowing.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But what if your team is facing a deadline and you don\u2019t all have time for a giggle filled jog?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Interesting enough aromatherapies, particularly vanilla and lavender, have been linked with the production of endorphins.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Spicy foods and dark chocolates will also cause human brains to release them.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>If that deadline is looming larger and your team is strapped in at their desks consider of having some fresh baked vanilla cookies and dark chocolate bars in the break room or conference room may help with that second wind.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>#fueledonthaifood<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>These are just four ideas to get your brain juices flowing as a leader about how to make your employees more happy, literally.<\/p>\n<p>Do you have any tips or tricks of your own? <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Are you a master at chemical warfare?<\/p>\n<p>Please share your successes and flops with me.<\/p>\n<p>I want to learn more about you!<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How to Wage Chemical Warfare Against Your Employees \u201cWhat is happiness?\u00a0 It\u2019s a moment before you need more happiness.\u201d &#8211; Don Draper There is a school of thought that posits that happy employees are better employees.\u00a0 The idea is that happy employees communicate better, they treat customers nicer, work harder, are more productive, and loyal.
